This event is aimed at practicing lawyers, and those with a strong interest in the role the law plays in the development agenda. A legal background is highly beneficial and you will need the critical skills to apply your knowledge to the new areas addressed during the course. Seminars and workshops are delivered by leading academics, development professionals and practicing lawyers to help participants understand how the law can secure, or be a barrier to, sustainable development. Dr David Karp (University of Sussex) will discuss the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and how the international business and human rights agenda is influencing commercial legal practice. Anna Kirkpatrick (Clifford Chance LLP) explores the professional, legal and ethical responsibilities of lawyers arising in the area of business and human rights. Helena Anderson (Herbert Smith Freehills LLP) discusses the importance of setting standards for responsible project financing in international development. Luciano Ciravegna (King's College London) analyses the importance of foreign direct investment in building infrastructure, job creation, capacity building and economic development. Dr James Scott (King's College London) outlines the political context the World Trade Organisation operate in and trade negotiations take place, assessing how trade can be a sustainable development strategy. This leads in to a group workshop that will simulate a trade negotiation.
