“How do Businesses Strategize Peace? Emerging Issues from Colombia”

…In December 2016, a peace agreement was signed between the Government of Colombia and the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC)...Colombian companies’ reactions to this milestone ranged from indifference, to fear that the agreement may affect market rules, to a cautious optimism of increased business opportunity. And firms have become involved in formal and informal post-conflict peacebuilding and reconstruction ventures, from local peacebuilding and development to public peace events…Our preliminary research with 20 businesses in Colombia has shown that the “logic of the firm” is well documented for crisis during conflict and the political risks therein, firms also respond and adapt their strategies in conflict-to-peace transitions…In Colombia, businesses employ four key peace strategies to navigate a conflict-to-peace transition: operational, philanthropic, political, and public relations.
