This conference is a multi-stakeholder platform on Southeast Asian regional risks and opportunities across a variety of agricultural crops. The purpose of the conference is to debate what strategies need to be implemented to build large-scale resilience, sustainability and development for the massive agricultural sector of Southeast Asian economies.
The meeting will offer international businesses, NGOs and governments the opportunity to network, share best practice and discuss collaboration efforts in order to realise the economic potential of the region without destroying the environment.
The agenda is structured to provide a high-level policy discussion on day one, and a practical, grounded discussion on the lives of farmers and the economics of being a smallholder on day two. The overarching goal of the event is to provide actionable guidance for the development of efforts that will boost the sustainability and livelihoods of smallholders in the region, while at the same time promoting land protection.
Some of the key questions this conference seeks to answer include:
How to boost the resilience of supply through climate-smart farming, prudent infrastructure development and intelligent technical assistance for farmers
How to integrate zero deforestation efforts and the prevention of forest burning with smallholder engagement programmes
How to provide sustainability and traceability of commodities without excluding farmers from accessing the international market
What is needed to make Southeast Asian agriculture more attractive for global capital and investment?
What are the latest financial innovations and opportunities that can be applied to the region?
How to properly engage with land rights issues in order to simplify business, secure livelihoods and protect forests
Background
This meeting builds on the work of several Innovation Forum conferences covering sectors including palm oil, sugar and cotton, all of which have smallholder farmers as a critical factor for sustainability. Innovation forum has a track record of bringing together big business, influential NGOs, relevant governments and other key actors to discuss progressive issues. Relevant to the present forum on smallholders in South East Asia, we ran the ‘How business can tackle deforestation’ conference in Singapore in September 2015, and successfully hosted the ‘How to build resilience and supply security with smallholder farmers’ conference in London, 22-23 March 2016.
