Welcome to Oxford University’s Master’s Programme in International Human Rights Law. The course is offered jointly by the Department for Continuing Education and the Faculty of Law. It is conducted on a part-time basis over 22 months and includes two periods of distance learning via the internet as well as two summer sessions held at New College, Oxford. The course includes a seminar on business & human rights. Business and Human Rights (2016) Tutor: Dr. Elizabeth Umlas This seminar seeks to introduce students to the emerging and rapidly developing field of business and human rights.  The course begins with a review of the international debate on corporate responsibility to respect human rights, and traces the emergence, within the UN, of a new framework on business and human rights. We then look at examples of measures and mechanisms (judicial and non-judicial; international, national and local) through which corporations might be held accountable for their impact on human rights. Next we focus on two areas that pose particularly difficult human rights challenges for companies (extractive industries; supply chain labor standards), examining key issues and exploring how companies, civil society organizations, governments, organized labor and other stakeholders have sought to address these. The seminar concludes with a discussion of an approach from within the private sector - socially responsible investment – and the implications of this approach for strengthening corporate responsibility to respect human rights. This course explores both theory and practice, and students will have the opportunity to discuss and debate actual cases that demonstrate the complexities found at the intersection of business and human rights. More about the course Welcome to Oxford University’s Master’s Programme in International Human Rights Law. The course is offered jointly by the Department for Continuing Education and the Faculty of Law. It is conducted on a part-time basis over 22 months and includes two periods of distance learning via the internet as well as two summer sessions held at New College, Oxford. The degree programme is designed in particular for lawyers and other human rights advocates who wish to pursue advanced studies in international human rights law but may need to do so alongside work responsibilities. A central objective of the course is to ensure that our students not only know but can also use human rights law. The curriculum places roughly equal emphasis on the substance of human rights law, its implementation and research. Our students so far have come from 80 countries. The faculty is also diverse and includes internationally recognised human rights scholars and advocates. For historical reasons, Oxford University does not offer an LLM degree. The standard one-year post-graduate degree at Oxford in the social sciences, including Law, is the Master of Studies (MSt). The MSt is roughly equivalent to an LLM but involves somewhat more assessed work than most LLM programmes in International Human Rights Law. Admissions are now open for the course starting September 2016 and will close at 12 noon (UK time) on 22 January 2016. Dates: 2 year course, starting September 2016 Location: Oxford & distance learning Regsitration: Follow the link below to register; deadline 22 January 2016
